Morocco Standardizes Vehicle Registration Plates
In a significant move aimed at streamlining vehicle registration processes, the National Road Safety Agency (NARSA) in Morocco has announced the implementation of a new unified model for vehicle registration plates. This initiative is designed for use both domestically and internationally, addressing various practical challenges associated with the current regulatory frameworks governing these plates, particularly during international travel.
On August 3, 2026, NARSA published a statement regarding the adoption of Ministerial Decision No. 640.26, which modifies the previous decision concerning vehicle registration made by the Minister of Equipment and Transport on September 29, 2010. The new regulations are aimed at standardizing the design and dimensions of registration plates required for vehicles operating within Morocco and abroad, thereby resolving inconsistencies that have arisen due to the different formats used for international travel compared to those employed domestically.
According to the agency's announcement, existing registration plates will continue to be valid for vehicles registered under the regular series that do not possess Latin characters and comply with Moroccan driving standards until the first transfer of ownership occurs. For motor vehicles registered under the standard series and used internationally, which display Latin characters and the symbol indicating the Kingdom of Morocco (MA) separated from the plate, the current plates will remain valid until December 31, 2026. After this date, they are to be replaced with the newly standardized model.
The implementation of the new unified model will commence immediately following the publication of the decision, affecting all newly registered vehicles acquired within Morocco or imported from abroad, whether new or used. NARSA has urged all manufacturers of vehicle registration plates to adhere strictly to the stipulations outlined in Decision No. 640.26, ensuring that the design, dimensions, and components of the plates conform to the specified standards.
