Morocco Issues Orange Weather Alert for Severe Heat and Thunderstorms

Severe Weather Conditions Expected Across Morocco

In a recent announcement, Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) has declared an orange-level weather alert due to the forecast of extreme temperatures and localized strong thunderstorms affecting various regions of the country on Thursday and Friday. The national meteorological authority predicts that a significant heatwave will impact several southern provinces, with temperatures soaring between 39 and 44 degrees Celsius. This scorching weather is anticipated to persist from Thursday through Friday, particularly in the provinces and prefectures of Es-Semara, Assa-Zag, Boujdour, Oued Eddahab, Aousserd, and Tata.

The DGM attributes the rising temperatures to the influx of warm air masses sweeping across the southern and southeastern regions, creating challenging weather conditions, especially during daylight hours. In light of these extreme heat levels, authorities are urging residents to exercise caution by minimizing sun exposure and ensuring adequate hydration.

Thunderstorm Warnings in Central Regions

In addition to the heatwave, the DGM has issued warnings about the likelihood of locally intense thunderstorms, which may include hail, particularly in several central regions of Morocco. These thunderstorms are forecasted to occur on Thursday between 1:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Areas such as Ifrane, Midelt, Boulemane, El Hajeb, and Khenifra are expected to experience significant rainfall, potentially reaching between 25 and 30 millimeters in a short timeframe. Moreover, these storms may be accompanied by strong winds and localized flooding in susceptible areas.

The meteorological authorities consistently issue alert bulletins during periods of unstable weather to equip local governments and residents with the necessary information to take precautionary measures and mitigate risks associated with extreme weather phenomena. The latest alert highlights Morocco's increasingly variable weather patterns, showcasing a stark contrast between the intense heat in the south and storm activity in the mountainous and inland areas. Consequently, authorities recommend that residents in the affected provinces closely monitor official weather updates and adhere to safety directives throughout the duration of the alert.
