Following the intense migrant crisis that unfolded at the end of July, the city of Ceuta continues to be under significant pressure as calls for another mass crossing attempt have surged since the beginning of the month. While Moroccan authorities have not made any official statements, it is evident on the ground that security measures have been significantly strengthened, particularly at the border with the Spanish enclave. The looming threat of a large-scale crossing on August 15 is being taken very seriously.
Social Media Influence and Increased Security Measures
On platforms like Facebook and Instagram, individuals seeking irregular migration are being encouraged to converge towards Ceuta, located in northern Morocco, with a particularly emphasized date of August 15 circulating among them. They are being invited to join private WhatsApp groups to share more concrete information regarding the crossing and to coordinate their movements. The Moroccan Interior Ministry, in its only comment following the Ceuta migration crisis, has pointed to the role of social media in disseminating misinformation. Despite this, many individuals continue to be exposed to various rumors on these platforms. The Moroccan Interior Ministry had not responded as of the evening of August 8. However, it appears that security arrangements have been bolstered in Fnideq and around the border post with Ceuta, as confirmed by local sources and supported by videos showing the substantial arrival of law enforcement vehicles. This type of call to action on social media is not a new phenomenon, as similar campaigns were noted in 2024 and 2025. It is also important to note that inciting illegal immigration is subject to legal repercussions within the kingdom.
