Morocco Joins International Stabilization Force for Gaza Peace Efforts

In a significant move towards enhancing stability in the Gaza Strip, Morocco has officially signed an agreement to become a part of the International Stabilization Force. This multinational mission, led by the United States, is aimed at monitoring ceasefires, facilitating humanitarian operations, and bolstering security measures in the region. The agreement was executed in Rabat by key Moroccan officials, including Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Minister-Delegate for National Defense Abdelltif Loudyi, and Nickolay Mladenov, the Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process.

Morocco's commitment involves the deployment of 400 troops to the mission, which will see senior military officers taking on crucial roles within the joint military command. Their responsibilities will encompass monitoring the ceasefire, ensuring the security of humanitarian aid corridors, safeguarding aid distribution sites, and enhancing border security. Additionally, the Moroccan contingent will include gendarmerie and police personnel, as well as the establishment of a military field hospital to support humanitarian efforts in the region.

The Moroccan defense administration has emphasized that this agreement reflects a mutual commitment to foster peace and security through tangible humanitarian and security initiatives. Such contributions are vital for creating a stable environment within Gaza and the surrounding regions. The leadership of the Gaza Peace Council and the International Stabilization Force has welcomed Morocco's involvement, underlining the importance of deploying senior military officers and the establishment of medical facilities to assist in humanitarian efforts.

As part of a broader international strategy, Washington has reached out to approximately 70 countries, seeking personnel contributions to the force, with an ambitious target of assembling a 10,000-strong multinational mission by the close of 2026. During a recent Board of Peace meeting in February, participating nations pledged around $17 billion to support this initiative. However, the response has been somewhat limited, with only a few countries, including Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, and Albania, committing troops; some of these commitments have been reevaluated due to political and security considerations.

Morocco, which has historically maintained a close alliance with the United States, reaffirmed its diplomatic relations with Israel in 2020 as part of the Abraham Accords. The decision to join the International Stabilization Force underscores Morocco's proactive stance in contributing to regional peace and enhances the roster of nations involved in this critical mission.
