Transforming Waste into Energy: A Major Leap for Morocco

Morocco is embarking on an ambitious project to construct a state-of-the-art waste-to-energy facility in Casablanca, with an investment of $1.5 billion. This initiative represents a significant milestone in the realm of sustainable urban management and the generation of clean energy. A consortium spearheaded by the Swiss-Japanese company Kanadevia Inova, in collaboration with Moroccan energy firm Nareva and Japan’s Itochu, has officially signed a concession agreement that sets the stage for construction to commence by the end of 2026. This innovative plant, which will be the second of its kind in Africa, is designed to process an impressive 1.5 million metric tons of municipal waste annually. Utilizing a combination of waste incineration, landfill gas, and solar power, the facility aims to generate approximately 115 megawatts of electricity—enough to power nearly one million residents. The construction will be carried out by Somagec, a Moroccan firm, while the financing will primarily come from local lenders. Additionally, a power purchase agreement has been established with the national utility, ONEE, ensuring a steady demand for the energy produced.

Addressing Environmental Challenges and Boosting Local Economy

The establishment of this facility directly targets the ongoing environmental issues associated with the Mediouna landfill, the largest of its kind in Morocco. The decomposition of waste at this site has led to significant methane emissions and various forms of pollution. Officials are optimistic that the new facility will dramatically mitigate these adverse effects, effectively converting waste into a reliable and sustainable energy source. Once operational, it is projected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an amount comparable to the annual output of a mid-sized European nation, representing a substantial contribution to global efforts against climate change.

Casablanca, with a population nearing four million in its metropolitan area, faces the common challenges of rapid urbanization, including increasing waste production and pressure on existing disposal facilities.
