Power Purchase Agreements Signed for Noor Atlas Solar Programme
In a significant step towards enhancing its renewable energy portfolio, Morocco's National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) and the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN) have formalized Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) for the ambitious 305 MW Noor Atlas photovoltaic programme. This groundbreaking initiative is set to unfold across six strategically located solar photovoltaic (PV) plants in the provinces of Jerada, Errachidia, Figuig, Boulemane, Tata, and Tan-Tan. The project embodies a collaborative effort, with both Moroccan and European consortiums coming together to cover various aspects of development, financing, construction, and operational management.
To oversee the implementation of this expansive project, MASEN has established the Noor Atlas Energy Company. This new entity will be instrumental in ensuring that the objectives of the programme are met efficiently and effectively. The financing structure of the Noor Atlas project is particularly noteworthy, as it incorporates concessional support from reputable European financial institutions, namely the European Investment Bank (EIB) and KfW, alongside substantial local investment from the Bank of Africa. This multi-faceted financing approach underscores the project's viability and the commitment of both local and international stakeholders to Morocco's renewable energy future.
The Noor Atlas programme is poised to start delivering electricity by July 2027, with the completion of construction targeted for the third quarter of the same year. This timeline reflects an optimistic outlook for the project, which aims to significantly contribute to Morocco's renewable energy generation capacity, aligning with the country’s broader sustainability and energy transition goals.
