Morocco is embarking on a transformative journey aimed at enhancing its railway infrastructure, focusing on improving connections between cities and economic, scientific, and sporting hubs. This initiative comes in preparation for significant upcoming international events. In this context, the National Office of Railways has announced a tender valued at over 385 million dirhams (approximately 38.5 million USD) for the construction and equipping of five new railway stations along the Ben Guerir–Marrakech corridor. This project aims to meet the demands of high-speed transportation while addressing regional mobility needs.
According to the specifications outlined in the tender documents, the project entails the creation of stations that will integrate seamlessly with the existing and planned railway system, thereby enhancing the network's capacity to accommodate urban and economic growth. The new facilities will include a high-speed train station and another for regional transport (RER) in the green city of Ben Guerir, designed to facilitate the movement of students, employees, and investors. Additionally, RER stations will be established in Sidi Bouathmane to strengthen connections between railway centers, in Sidi Ghanem to support the growing industrial and commercial activities, and at the Marrakech stadium to cater to crowds and visitors during major events.
The scope of the tender extends beyond mere construction of buildings; it encompasses the development of supporting infrastructure and concrete structures, including the construction of platforms and walkways, along with finishing works such as insulation and painting. Furthermore, it involves the installation of essential networks for electricity, water, sewage, ventilation, air conditioning, safety and protection systems, and fire prevention measures.
The winning contractor will be obligated to meet technical requirements, including the preparation of approved studies and plans prior to the commencement of work, adherence to quality and environmental protection standards, and ensuring safety within the construction sites. Additionally, the contractor must provide the necessary teams and equipment while adhering to the project timeline without disrupting train operations.
This project is part of Morocco's broader strategy to accelerate investments in railway infrastructure, transitioning towards an integrated system that combines high-speed trains with regional and urban transport services. The new stations are expected to significantly enhance the attractiveness of the Ben Guerir–Marrakech axis and provide efficient public transportation options, which is of paramount importance as the kingdom prepares to host major international events, including the 2030 World Cup, to accommodate the anticipated surge in passenger numbers.
