Morocco has officially expressed its support for the Sila Atlantik electric interconnection project, a significant initiative aimed at connecting the country’s renewable energy resources with Germany. As reported by the German daily Handelsblatt on August 20, the Moroccan Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, recently sent a letter to Frank Wetzel, the State Secretary at the German Ministry of Economy and Energy, outlining the Moroccan government's endorsement of the project.
The ambitious Sila Atlantik project, spearheaded by the British company Xlinks through its subsidiary Sila Atlantik Germany, plans to transport electricity generated from wind and solar farms in Morocco to Germany via two underwater cables, each stretching 4,800 kilometers. With an estimated investment of around $30 billion, this project is poised to play a critical role in both countries' renewable energy strategies.
According to the letter reviewed by the German media, this initiative aligns perfectly with Morocco's strategic vision, and the Moroccan government has expressed its willingness to engage in discussions about the project's development in close coordination with their German counterparts. Roman Dudenhausen, a co-founder of the project, remarked to Handelsblatt that the opening of discussions between the two nations marks a "new major step," emphasizing that Moroccan governmental support is vital for the project's success.
