Continued Mobilization for Political Prisoners in Morocco
One year ago, Morocco witnessed the inaugural demonstration of the GenZ 212 movement, a grassroots initiative aimed at advocating for social change and justice. Fast forward twelve months, and the struggle continues, with over 600 individuals still incarcerated as a result of the protests. In response to this ongoing situation, the campaign "Free Koulchi," which translates to "Free them all," has organized a series of events across several Moroccan cities and internationally, including Paris, Brussels, and Madrid, to raise awareness about the plight of these detainees.
Gathering of Solidarity in Casablanca
In Casablanca, a gathering dubbed "Day of Solidarity with Political Prisoners" took place, featuring portraits of prominent figures from the Hirak movement alongside those imprisoned for their social media activities. The event was hosted at a local union hall, where dozens of young activists, many of whom had previously participated in GenZ 212 protests, convened to express their solidarity. One young man, who recently spent eight months in detention, emphasized the significance of this gathering by stating, "It is crucial for us to unite with those capable of instigating change. Ideas are eternal, and we must keep them alive by discussing them together." The event featured speeches and messages of support for the GenZ 212 movement, including one from Nasser Zefzafi, a prominent leader currently imprisoned.
Oumaima Boujaera, a lawyer involved in the defense of GenZ 212, highlighted the persistent state of oppression facing the movement, asserting, "We remain entrenched in a cycle of intimidation and arrests. Even after a year, the government's approach has not changed; we continue to witness arrests, ongoing trials, and severe sentencing." The remnants of the GenZ 212 movement are now primarily focused on advocating for the release of those imprisoned, having recently launched an online campaign to galvanize support for this cause.
