Controversy Erupts Over Global Sumud Flotilla's Position on Sahara Dispute
A recently released promotional video by the Global Sumud Flotilla platform has ignited significant outrage in Morocco, primarily due to its defense of the Polisario Front's stance regarding the ongoing Sahara dispute. This has been interpreted by many as a deviation from the initiative's originally stated mission, which primarily focuses on humanitarian support. The video attempts to draw parallels between the Palestinian struggle and the situation in the Sahara, announcing a new documentary series titled "One Struggle: Western Sahara," that aims to explore the interconnectedness of resistance and liberation movements worldwide.
In the video, the Sahara region is characterized as a territory under Moroccan occupation, allegedly supported by powerful nations, while the Polisario Front is presented as the legitimate "Sahrawi liberation movement." Furthermore, it claims that the Sahrawi people's quest for independence persists, particularly following what it describes as the International Court of Justice's rejections of Moroccan and Mauritanian sovereignty claims over the territory.
Strong Reactions and Calls for Accountability
The Justice and Development Party (PJD) has been quick to respond, vehemently condemning the content disseminated by the Global Sumud Flotilla. The party labeled the video as containing "grave misrepresentations" concerning the Moroccan Sahara and accused the initiative of straying into issues that are not aligned with its original humanitarian goals. In an official statement, the PJD described the incident as a "serious mistake and a dangerous breach," cautioning that it could diminish the popular support that the initiative had previously garnered. However, they reaffirmed that this controversy would not change the historical and legal consensus regarding Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara, a view supported by various UN Security Council resolutions and numerous countries, including permanent members of the Council.
Additionally, the PJD emphasized that the flotilla's position places it in opposition to all Moroccans, as the Sahara matter is crucial to the Kingdom's national unity and territorial integrity. They accused external actors of exploiting the dispute to promote separatism and destabilize the region. The PJD has since called for an apology from those behind the initiative, urging them to rectify what they termed a "grave mistake" that has diverted the flotilla from its declared purpose.
Similarly, the Moroccan Initiative for Support and Advocacy, an independent civil organization with Islamic affiliations that supports the Palestinian cause, has also condemned the Global Sumud Flotilla's content, labeling it an affront to Morocco and its territorial integrity. The organization characterized this as a dangerous departure from the initiative's humanitarian mission, claiming that the suffering of residents in Gaza is being manipulated to further agendas of division and separatism. They have demanded an investigation into the incident and accountability for those responsible, arguing that the publication is an insult to Moroccans, many of whom have previously participated in aid convoys to Gaza and faced severe repercussions as a result.
Aziz Hennawi, secretary-general of the Moroccan Observatory Against Normalization, has also weighed in, asserting that the actions of those behind the video appear to serve Zionist interests and are aimed at undermining the flotilla from within. He pointed out that the Sahara issue does not fall within the purview of the Sumud Flotilla's mission to Gaza, stressing that Moroccan organizations would never have supported the initiative had its organizers openly aligned with what he referred to as the separatist narrative.
