Morocco's Commitment to Road Safety
On July 20, 2026, during an event held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Morocco's Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdessamad Kayouh, highlighted the nation’s commitment to prioritizing road safety as a fundamental component of its sustainable development efforts. This declaration was made during the Donor Conference of the United Nations Road Safety Fund (UNRSF), where he was joined by Omar Hilale, Morocco's permanent representative to the UN. Minister Kayouh emphasized Morocco's pride in being a partner of the UNRSF and reiterated that, as the president of the Fund's Advisory Council, the Kingdom is dedicated to furthering its mission to save lives through international cooperation.
According to Minister Kayouh, the donor conference is not solely focused on financial contributions but also serves as a vital platform for collaboration aimed at saving more lives. He underscored the vulnerability of motorcyclists, labeling them as one of the most at-risk groups on the road. As a result, he pointed out that ensuring the safety of motorcyclists has been declared a national priority for Morocco.
Initiatives to Enhance Road Safety
In line with this commitment, Minister Kayouh referenced the launch of the Mohammed VI International Prize for Road Safety during the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety, which took place in February 2025 in Marrakech. This initiative is part of a broader strategy that includes the establishment of a Road Safety Village aimed at promoting the use of helmets and raising awareness among motorcyclists. The Moroccan government has also supported the distribution of helmets as part of these efforts.
The conference, co-organized by France, Jamaica, the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Road Safety, and the UN's regional commissions, aims to mobilize $10.6 million to sustain and expand the UNRSF's interventions throughout the latter half of the Decade of Action for Road Safety. This event was held alongside a high-level meeting of the General Assembly focused on road safety, which seeks to accelerate progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Notable attendees included Jean Todt, the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Road Safety, and Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO).
