Morocco's Growing Presence in Educational Migration
According to a recent study published in the fourth edition of 2026 of the WISTA magazine, issued by the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, Morocco has secured the fifth position among non-European Union countries and the United Kingdom in terms of the number of migrants residing in Germany whose relocation was primarily motivated by education. The study reveals that approximately 37,000 Moroccans have made this educational migration, placing Morocco in a significant role among the leading countries in educational migration to Germany. Notably, India tops the list with 98,000 individuals, followed by China with 77,000, Turkey with 52,000, and Iran with 43,000, highlighting the substantial educational migration trend from Morocco.
The findings indicate that about 924,000 individuals residing in Germany have cited education as the primary reason for their migration. This category includes not only university students but also those who moved to Germany for various forms of education and continuous training. The study emphasizes that 79% of this group comes from countries outside the European Union and the European Free Trade Association, underscoring the significant impact of non-European migration on the overall composition of migrants in Germany seeking educational opportunities.
Understanding Migration Trends and Demographics
The research utilized data from the 2025 German Microcensus, which allows for the classification of migrants based on various characteristics, including country of birth and reasons for migration. It is important to note that the figure of 37,000 does not represent the number of Moroccans who migrated to Germany in 2025 but rather the number of individuals born in Morocco residing in Germany in that year who classified education as their primary migration reason. Furthermore, the study cautions against treating the reason for migration as an absolute indicator, as this information relies on self-reported data from individuals during the census, which may vary in accuracy, particularly for those who migrated many years prior.
Demographically, men account for 55% of the total migrants who moved to Germany for educational reasons, while women represent 45%. Furthermore, 75% of these migrants hold foreign citizenship, and the average duration of their stay in Germany is approximately 14 years. These statistics underscore the notable Moroccan presence within educational migration pathways to Germany, as Morocco ranks among the top five countries in this regard while India, China, Turkey, and Iran lead the list of non-European origin countries.
This study is part of a broader analysis of the diverse situations of migrants in Germany, aiming to move beyond the perception of migrants as a homogenous group by distinguishing them based on their reasons for migration, countries of birth, length of stay, and demographic characteristics. This approach allows for a more nuanced understanding of migration pathways and integration into German society.
