Morocco Achieves Significant Progress in Innovation
In a notable advancement, Morocco has climbed to the 54th position out of 139 countries, according to the 2026 Global Innovation Index report released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on October 1, 2026. This marks an improvement of three places compared to last year and a remarkable leap of 23 positions since 2021, showcasing the country's growing commitment to innovation and development.
The report indicates that Morocco scored 32.8 points, placing it fourth among lower middle-income economies and positioning it fourth among Arab nations, trailing only behind the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, which ranked 25th, 42nd, and 47th globally, respectively. This progress highlights Morocco's strategic efforts to enhance its innovative capabilities in a competitive global landscape.
According to a statement from the Moroccan Office of Industrial and Commercial Property, Morocco stands out particularly in the realm of intangible assets, achieving 11th place worldwide in this category, an impressive six-position rise from the previous report. This success can be attributed to Morocco's fifth-place ranking globally in design and model registrations relative to GDP, which underscores the country’s active engagement in fostering innovative practices.
Furthermore, Morocco ranks 16th globally in trademark registrations per GDP, also witnessing a six-position increase from the last report. In terms of patent registrations, Morocco occupies the 58th position globally, improving by four ranks compared to the previous index. These figures illustrate Morocco's enhanced focus on intellectual property rights and innovation-driven economic growth.
Globally, Switzerland retains its top position, followed by Sweden and the United States. The report notes that despite ongoing global economic and geopolitical turmoil, the top 25 innovation-leading countries have maintained their standings, reflecting a resilient commitment to advancing technological and innovative frontiers.
The Global Innovation Index assesses the innovative performance of 139 economies based on approximately 80 indicators, covering various aspects such as research and development expenditure, venture capital deals, advanced technology exports, and intellectual property registrations, thereby providing a comprehensive overview of innovation worldwide.
