Morocco's Remarkable Growth as a Key Supplier

The imports from Morocco to Gipuzkoa have experienced an astonishing increase of 113% during the first half of the year, marking a significant milestone as the North African nation enters the top ten list of suppliers to the region for the first time. The total imports soared to €97.5 million by June, showcasing the largest growth among Gipuzkoa's main trading partners, propelling Morocco to the eighth position, ahead of Portugal.

This burgeoning trade relationship contrasts sharply with the tension-laden history between Spain and Morocco, especially highlighted by the recent humanitarian crisis this summer. However, the evolving geopolitical landscape and the pressing need to bring supply chains closer to Europe have led to a commendable diversification of Gipuzkoa's commercial portfolio, strengthening ties with Morocco as it increasingly emerges as an industrial and logistical hub.

A significant driver of this growth can be attributed to the category of electrical appliances and materials, which saw a staggering surge of 18,140% compared to the first half of the previous year, reaching €51.2 million. This category encompasses machinery, equipment, and components related to the generation, transmission, transformation, and storage of electrical energy, as well as products associated with telecommunications and audio-visual systems. Notably, wires and cables accounted for nearly the entire volume within this category, with Gipuzkoa purchasing these products valued at €51.1 million. These materials serve critical applications across various sectors, including automotive, telecommunications, construction, infrastructure, and electrical industries.
