Transforming Financial Transfers into Strategic Investments

Morocco is making significant strides towards positioning itself as a preferred destination for investment from its diaspora, as articulated by Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch. The Moroccan government is keen on converting the substantial remittances sent home by expatriates into fruitful investments that not only stimulate economic growth but also create job opportunities and add value to the national economy. During the opening of a national forum focused on investment and the Moroccan diaspora, Akhannouch emphasized the importance of establishing a 'new form of economic relationship' with citizens living abroad, aiming to enhance their engagement in the country's economic landscape.

With remittances from Moroccans overseas projected to exceed 122 billion dirhams (approximately $12.2 billion) by 2025, the government recognizes the critical role these funds can play in fostering innovation and bolstering regional development. However, despite their substantial financial contributions, the involvement of Moroccans in private investment remains limited, estimated at a mere 10%. This scenario highlights the pressing need for strategic initiatives to mobilize diaspora resources effectively.

Enhancing Support and Investment Frameworks for the Diaspora

In response to these challenges, King Mohammed VI has called for a concerted effort to engage diaspora capital and expertise, thereby expanding their participation in national development. Akhannouch noted that the government is underway with institutional reforms aimed at improving the collaboration between public entities that interact with expatriates, ensuring that policies are more targeted and effective. Moreover, initiatives to enhance access to social and economic programs, such as housing support, are being implemented to strengthen the connection between overseas Moroccans and their homeland.

Investment Minister Karim Zidane echoed these sentiments during the forum, urging Moroccans abroad to take on a more prominent role in the country's economic transformation. He encouraged them to invest wisely, transfer technology, and promote innovation, which would contribute to job creation and the opening of new markets for Moroccan products. Recognizing the potential of diaspora investors to foster balanced regional development, the government is introducing tailored measures to improve the investment climate for expatriates.

These measures include establishing dedicated services within the Moroccan Agency for Investment and Export Development aimed at offering guidance and streamlining administrative processes for diaspora-led initiatives. Furthermore, regional investment centers are being equipped with dedicated contact points to ensure better support and follow-up for projects initiated by expatriates. Organized under the patronage of King Mohammed VI, this forum represents a pivotal moment for policymakers and members of the Moroccan diaspora to collaborate on enhancing investment partnerships and facilitating Morocco's integration into global value chains, ultimately driving the nation’s economic advancement.
