On October 7, 2026, Morocco made significant strides in enhancing its defense and aerospace sectors by signing a series of agreements aimed at developing and producing defense systems locally. These initiatives form part of Morocco's broader strategy to strengthen its industrial capabilities and localize military technology. The announcements were made during the opening of the eighth Marrakech International Airshow, which is set to run until October 10, 2026, featuring participation from various companies and delegations across multiple countries.

According to reports from Anadolu Agency, the Moroccan National Defense Administration and Harmattan AI Morocco, a private company, have signed a memorandum of understanding focused on the acquisition, development, and production of long-range strike systems known as "Irevy" within Morocco. This agreement is critical as it marks the country's commitment to advancing its military technology.

Additionally, an investment agreement was established to create an industrial and technological platform in Morocco dedicated to the development and manufacturing of autonomous defense systems. The agreement was signed by several key figures, including the Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour; the Minister Delegate for National Defense Administration, Abdellatif Loudiyi; the Minister Delegate for Investment, Karim Zidane; and a representative from Harmattan AI Morocco.

The signed agreements also encompass other aviation-related sectors, including the establishment of a research platform that will connect international companies with Moroccan institutions, alongside the manufacturing of components for aircraft engines. The eighth edition of the International Airshow, which commenced on Wednesday in Marrakech, showcases the latest technologies and solutions in both aerospace and defense.

During the opening ceremony, Loudiyi emphasized that the aviation and space sectors, along with associated technologies, have become a crucial lever for the development of national industrial capabilities. He noted that Morocco's aviation industry has undergone a qualitative transition from simple assembly to advanced manufacturing and engineering, highlighting the country’s efforts to establish a robust local defense industry.

Morocco relies heavily on attracting foreign investments and localizing technology related to the military to bolster its defense manufacturing capabilities. In July 2025, the country issued a decree establishing two industrial zones specifically dedicated to defense industries, aimed at developing a local industrial base in this strategic field.

The targeted industries include defense and security equipment, weapon systems, and ammunition, as well as associated maintenance activities. Furthermore, Morocco enacted a law in 2020 regulating the manufacturing, trade, import, and export of defense and security equipment, thereby paving the way for the establishment of a domestic military industry.
