Morocco Strongly Condemns Iranian Aggression Against Arab Nations at UNHRC

Morocco's Firm Stance on Iranian Attacks

On Wednesday, Morocco delivered a powerful condemnation of what it termed "abject attacks" executed by Iran against several Arab nations, a statement made during the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) held in Geneva. The Moroccan Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Omar Zniber, articulated these concerns during an urgent debate, underscoring that the strikes targeting Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan represent a significant violation of international norms.

Ambassador Zniber emphasized that this blatant aggression constitutes a severe infringement on the national sovereignty of these allied Arab countries, posing an unacceptable threat to regional peace and stability. He reminded the assembly that King Mohammed VI had previously voiced the Kingdom’s unwavering solidarity with the nations under attack, highlighting that these actions hinder ongoing diplomatic efforts by Gulf states to foster dialogue with Iran for the sake of regional stability. Zniber characterized the rising tension as part of a broader spectrum of destabilizing behaviors by Iran, which he claims includes persistent support for extremist and separatist factions in the region alongside direct threats to the territorial integrity of Arab states.

Humanitarian Concerns and Maritime Safety

Moreover, Morocco condemned the assaults targeting civilian populations and essential infrastructure via missile and drone operations, stressing the humanitarian repercussions these attacks create for vulnerable communities. The Kingdom also expressed its disapproval of Iranian strikes on commercial vessels in the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz, reaffirming its support for initiatives led by the International Maritime Organization aimed at ensuring freedom of navigation in this vital waterway.

During the UNHRC session, Morocco welcomed the passage of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817 and expressed its full endorsement of a draft resolution addressing the same concerns. Co-sponsored by Morocco, this draft text vehemently condemns the so-called "unprovoked" Iranian attacks against Gulf nations and Jordan, while also raising alarms about strikes aimed at civilians and critical infrastructures, such as energy, transport, water, and food systems. Furthermore, it underscores the broader regional and global ramifications stemming from these escalations, particularly the disruptions to maritime trade through the Strait of Hormuz, which could have far-reaching impacts on supply chains, food security, and living conditions across the globe. The draft resolution reaffirms the sovereignty of the affected states, acknowledges their inherent right to self-defense, and vocally condemns infringements on freedom of navigation and assaults on energy infrastructure.
