Moroccan Coffee Imports Soar as Uganda's Exports Decline

In a noteworthy development within the global coffee trade, Morocco has ascended to the position of Uganda's fourth-largest coffee export market as of July 2026. According to the latest report from Uganda's Ministry of Agriculture, Morocco imported a total of 50,222 bags of coffee, each weighing 60 kilograms, which translates to approximately 3,013 metric tons. This accounted for 5.9% of Uganda's total coffee exports for the month, marking a slight increase from the 5% share recorded in June when Morocco held the fifth position. This significant uptick in coffee imports highlights Morocco's growing interest in robusta coffee, with shipments primarily comprising 49,905 bags of this variety, alongside a mere 317 bags of arabica coffee.

Competition in the Coffee Export Market

Italy continues to dominate as the largest destination for Uganda’s coffee, absorbing 29.3% of the total exports. It is closely followed by Sudan with a 15.1% share and Germany at 10.7%, as detailed in the ministry's coffee report for July. However, despite Morocco's impressive rise, the overall coffee export volume from Uganda has experienced a decline. The total shipments in July amounted to 846,376 bags, worth approximately $204.1 million, which represents a decrease of 14.9% in volume and 18.4% in value compared to July 2025. Notably, robusta coffee constituted about 92% of Uganda’s total coffee export volume during this period, underscoring its significance in the country’s agricultural exports.
