Morocco: The Future Global Maritime Hub

Transforming Morocco into a Key Maritime Connector

According to Zakaria Firano, an esteemed economics professor at the Faculty of Law and Economic Sciences in Rabat Agdal, the evolution of Morocco's port infrastructure is set to significantly alter the Kingdom's positioning on the global stage. In a recent interview, Firano emphasized that Morocco is poised to transcend its role as merely a gateway to Africa, emerging as a pivotal maritime connection to Europe and the Middle East through the Strait of Gibraltar.

This burgeoning prominence is largely attributed to the competitive edge of Morocco's key ports, particularly Tanger Med and Casablanca. Firano pointed out that Tanger Med has impressively positioned itself among the top 20 ports globally, leading as the foremost port in Africa and the Mediterranean. It has successfully surpassed its Italian and Spanish counterparts in performance and strategic importance, a development that Firano notes has not received the attention it deserves.

Furthering this momentum is the royal vision which fosters a synergistic relationship among several critical sites. Casablanca port remains a vital growth engine, facilitating both local industry and the import of goods. Additionally, other ports like Jorf Lasfar are becoming essential for the OCP and the export of phosphates. Morocco is also embarking on ambitious projects such as the Nador port, which is strategically significant, expected to handle over 18% of global energy transit.

Moreover, the construction of the Dakhla Atlantique port in the southern provinces, currently at 48% completion and set to be operational by 2030, will finalize this geostrategic framework. Firano believes that this grand initiative will serve as a crucial access point for the Sahel countries, ushering in a new logistical era for Africa as a whole.
