New Entry Regulations for Algerian Citizens in Morocco
In a significant policy shift, Morocco has recently heightened access restrictions for Algerian nationals seeking to enter its territory. According to diplomatic sources, Algerians are now required to present proof of residence in Morocco to gain entry. This measure is currently described as temporary and does not yet entail a visa requirement for Algerians. The implications of this decision are still unfolding.
In recent weeks, several Algerian travelers have reported being denied entry into Morocco, sharing their experiences through videos on social media platforms. Some individuals claim they were barred from boarding flights operated by French airlines due to the absence of residency documentation. Others have recounted being turned away at Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca for lacking proof of accommodation and return flights.
Just two weeks ago, Algerian media outlets announced that an official decision regarding these new restrictions was forthcoming from Moroccan authorities, though they did not provide verification of this claim. Since then, there has been neither an official confirmation nor a denial from Moroccan officials, considering that Morocco has not yet imposed visa requirements on Algerians.
In an inquiry made by L’Opinion, diplomatic sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Algerians are indeed prohibited from entering Morocco without a residency permit or equivalent documentation. This restriction has been effective since September 16, and although it has not been formalized as an official decree, it is a temporary measure communicated to airlines.
The rationale behind this decision remains unclear at present. However, it is notable that this development follows a series of incidents involving Algerians who attempted to enter Spain illegally via Moroccan territory, particularly through the enclave of Ceuta. Additionally, there have been unsettling antics from certain Algerian influencers and travelers who have posted deliberately provocative content disparaging Morocco and its institutions during their visits to the country. This observation is merely a factual recounting and is not indicative of the sources consulted by our editorial team.
It remains uncertain whether Moroccan authorities implemented these measures as a reciprocal response or purely as a precautionary measure for security reasons. It is also crucial to recall that Algeria has mandated visas for Moroccans since September 2024 after unilaterally severing diplomatic relations three years prior and closing its airspace to flights to and from Morocco.
