In a significant move towards sustainable energy, a consortium led by the Swiss-Japanese firm Kanadevia Inova has announced plans to construct a $1.5 billion waste-to-energy facility in Casablanca, Morocco, by the end of this year. This ambitious project, projected to be fully operational by mid-2030, marks a pivotal step in addressing both energy needs and environmental concerns in the region.

The upcoming plant, which will be the second of its kind in Africa, aims to generate electricity while simultaneously mitigating methane emissions and reducing other environmental impacts linked to the Mediouna landfill, the largest waste disposal site in Morocco. The consortium, which includes Moroccan energy company Nareva and Japan's Itochu, recently signed a concession agreement with the city government of Casablanca, solidifying their commitment to this eco-friendly initiative.

Once operational, the waste-to-energy plant is expected to process approximately 1.5 million metric tons of waste each year, generating around 115 megawatts of electricity through a combination of waste, solar energy, and landfill gas. This output is anticipated to be sufficient to power nearly one million residents, showcasing the project's potential to enhance energy security in the region.

However, the initiative has faced criticism from various stakeholders, including environmental scientists, climate activists, and local community organizations. Critics argue that such facilities may undermine recycling efforts and produce harmful emissions, as many waste-to-energy plants rely heavily on incineration processes. Addressing these concerns, Kanadevia Inova's Chief Executive, Bruno-Frédéric Baudouin, emphasized the importance of securing debt and equity financing before commencing construction, expected to begin in the fourth quarter of this year. The Moroccan construction firm Somagec has been contracted to build the facility.

Baudouin indicated that the construction timeline is projected to span approximately 3.5 years; however, both waste treatment and electricity generation could commence six to ten months prior to the project's final completion. Additionally, a power purchase agreement has been established with the state-owned electricity utility, ONEE, while the consortium seeks financial backing from Moroccan lenders to support the project. Notably, Baudouin stated that the financing will be entirely sourced from local entities.

The Mediouna landfill has long been a source of nuisance for nearby communities, generating unpleasant odors and pollution that affect local farmland. The new waste-to-energy facility is expected to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, potentially equivalent to 20% of Switzerland's annual emissions—a figure that Baudouin likened to removing 300,000 cars from the streets. This initiative not only represents a leap forward in Morocco's energy landscape but also underscores the nation's commitment to environmental sustainability and innovation.
