Strengthening Electoral Oversight in Africa
The fifth edition of the African Union's observer training program commenced on April 20, 2026, in the capital city of Rabat, Morocco. During the opening ceremony, Minister Bourita highlighted the substantial progress made in this initiative over the past five years. Remarkably, nearly 400 trained observers have emerged from this program, representing 53 countries across the continent's five sub-regions. Notably, 65% of these trainees are women, and 85% are young individuals, reflecting a dedication to nurturing the future leaders of Africa. While these statistics are impressive, they only tell part of the story. The real impact lies in the practical outcomes, as over 95% of these observers have already been deployed in the field, contributing significantly to the success of numerous African Union observation missions.
Commissioner Adeoye remarked that this special training session celebrates fifteen years of commitment to enhancing governance and democracy across Africa. He emphasized that the program's inception aimed to bridge the gap between democratic ideals and the realities of electoral processes. Each year, the training benefits an increasing number of participants from the continent's five sub-regions, thereby strengthening the foundation of qualified electoral observers ready to be deployed during elections throughout Africa.
