Morocco and the African Union Collaborate to Train Electoral Observers
On April 20, 2026, the Kingdom of Morocco, in partnership with the African Union (AU), inaugurated the fifth edition of its training program for African electoral observers in Rabat. The event, which is scheduled to run until April 25, 2026, has attracted nearly 90 participants from 53 member states, including delegations from Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, Sudan, and Madagascar. Since the program's inception in 2022, approximately 400 experts have been trained, encompassing a diverse group of individuals, including women, youth, and people with disabilities. This initiative aims to bolster transparency and electoral sovereignty across the continent by cultivating a pool of highly skilled experts.
The Moroccan government, alongside the African Union, has made significant strides in establishing a network of electoral observers who are well-equipped to ensure the integrity of democratic processes. During the opening ceremony, Morocco's Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita emphasized the inclusivity of the training, which comprises 65% women and 85% young participants. Yamba Malick Sawadogo, a former pan-African parliamentarian, underscored the importance of disseminating electoral knowledge across the continent, noting that many key players often lack a comprehensive understanding of the electoral cycle. Erick Joseph, another participant, shared his positive experiences thus far, commending the facilitators and the enriching learning environment.
