Morocco Unveils $3.33 Million Initiative to Create Eco-Industrial Parks

Transforming Industrial Zones into Eco-Friendly Parks

In a significant stride towards sustainable industrial development, Morocco has launched an ambitious program aimed at transforming its industrial zones into eco-industrial parks. The initiative, known as the Global Eco-Industrial Parks Program (GEIPP II), was formally inaugurated with a budget of CHF 3 million (approximately $3.33 million) on March 16, 2026. This program is set to revitalize five major industrial zones across the country, including the Atlantic Free Zone in Kenitra, Jorf Lasfar Industrial Zone in El Jadida, Ain Jouhara Industrial Complex in Khemisset, Tasila 1 and 2 in Agadir, and the Selouane Industrial Zone in Nador.

The signing of the implementation agreement involved key stakeholders: the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Swiss Government through the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). Minister Ryad Mezzour emphasized the program's goal of fostering collaboration among companies to optimize resource usage and promote circular economy principles. This initiative builds upon the successful Country Partnership Program (CPP Morocco) established between UNIDO and the Moroccan trade ministry, marking a pivotal point in the nation’s industrial strategy.

Goals and Vision for a Sustainable Future

The primary objective of GEIPP II is to convert conventional industrial zones into eco-industrial parks, which will facilitate industrial synergies and enhance the sustainable management of resources. As articulated by UNIDO representative Sanaa Lahlou, the program aims to transform these industrial areas into greener, eco-friendly environments, thereby significantly reducing CO2 emissions and minimizing waste. It seeks to create a robust framework for the sustainable use of raw materials and energy across Morocco's industrial landscape.

Set for implementation from 2026 to 2028, the GEIPP II program represents a vital step in Morocco's commitment to developing a competitive and climate-resilient industrial sector. This endeavor not only aligns with existing public policies but also reinforces partnerships with international organizations such as the World Bank Group and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). Overall, GEIPP II aims to promote circular economy approaches within the industrial sector, striving to reduce the environmental footprint of industrial activities while enhancing their resilience against climate change impacts.
