Landmark Achievement in Quranic Translation

The Mohammed VI Foundation for the Publication of the Holy Quran has proudly announced the release of the first official translation of the Quran's meanings into Tachelhit, a significant step for the Amazigh community in Morocco. This initiative was brought to fruition by the Moroccan Amazigh League, highlighting years of dedicated work by a group of Quranic scholars from the Souss region. The primary aim of this translation is to make the Quranic text more accessible to Tachelhit speakers by utilizing commonly understood expressions and steering clear of complex or unfamiliar terminology.

This meticulously crafted translation employs Arabic script with diacritical marks to facilitate easier reading. It adheres to conventions established by the esteemed scholar Mohammed El Mokhtar Soussi, conveying the essence of the verses without claiming to be an exhaustive commentary. According to the League, local teams engaged in weekly meetings to discuss and refine the translation, which underwent rigorous scientific evaluation and was verified three times to ensure accuracy and fidelity. The experts relied on recognized Quranic exegeses and texts from the Souss region while respecting the prevailing Maliki jurisprudence and Ash'ari theology in Morocco.

A Cultural Milestone

The published work is a substantial volume measuring 25 by 35 centimeters, consisting of 1,278 pages, excluding appendices. It features the Quranic text in Arabic, beautifully calligraphed in the Moroccan style, alongside the Tachelhit translation. The book is adorned with decorative elements inspired by Amazigh culture and boasts an ivory white cover embellished with golden motifs, making it not only a religious text but also a cultural artifact.

This endeavor follows a recommendation made during a scientific meeting in Agadir in December 2012 and is part of a long-standing tradition of translating Quranic verses and other religious texts into Amazigh languages. This project aims to enhance comprehension and memorization for learners, thus enriching the spiritual lives of Tachelhit speakers and reinforcing their cultural identity.
