Morocco's Skyline Transformed with the Inauguration of Tower Mohammed VI
Morocco has recently achieved a significant milestone in its architectural landscape with the inauguration of Tower Mohammed VI, a stunning skyscraper that stands at an impressive height of 250 meters. This landmark structure has not only claimed the title of the tallest building in Morocco but has also secured its position as the third tallest skyscraper on the African continent. Designed by the acclaimed Spanish architect Rafael de La-Hoz, this glass and steel giant embodies modern architectural innovation and ambition.
A New Era in Moroccan Architecture
The official unveiling of the tower took place on April 13, in a ceremony presided over by Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan, accompanied by institutional representatives and stakeholders involved in the project. This development aims to set a new benchmark in contemporary architecture within Morocco. Situated alongside the Bouregreg River, the tower features 55 floors situated atop a four-level podium, allowing it to be visible from over 50 kilometers away. Its sleek silhouette is integrated into a complex that encompasses over 100,000 square meters, designed as a new hub for economic, residential, and tourism activities.
With this inauguration, Morocco has firmly entered the race for towering skyscrapers in Africa, now ranking third in height on the continent. It follows the Iconic Tower near Cairo, which stands at 393 meters, and the Great Mosque of Algiers minaret, which reaches 265 meters. Inside, the skyscraper has been conceptualized as an ecosystem of luxury and premium services, featuring office spaces, high-end apartments, retail areas, and restaurants, along with a luxury hotel operated by Waldorf Astoria.
One of the tower's main attractions will be its panoramic platform, offering breathtaking views of the city and the Bouregreg Valley from its heights. To enhance mobility within the building, the complex is equipped with 36 elevators distributed between the tower and its podium. The interior decoration has been entrusted to the Belgian studio Flamant, which has opted for an elegant and contemporary design that complements the monumentality of the structure.
Designed by the renowned architect Rafael de La-Hoz from Córdoba, the Tower Mohammed VI is a testament to his expertise and vision in contemporary Spanish architecture. The project was developed in collaboration with Moroccan architect Hakim Benjelloun and promoted by O Capital Group, chaired by Moroccan entrepreneur Othman Benjelloun. Throughout his career, De La-Hoz has undertaken urban planning and architectural projects in various countries, including Spain, Portugal, Poland, Romania, Hungary, and the United Arab Emirates, solidifying his international reputation for innovation and energy efficiency.
Beyond its aesthetic impact, the tower emphasizes sustainability and energy efficiency. Among its innovative solutions are photovoltaic panels integrated into the southern facade, covering an area of approximately 1,800 square meters, complemented by an additional 2,200 square meters on the podium's roof.
