Moroccan Authorities Take Action Against Extremism
In a significant operation carried out by Morocco's Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ), under the auspices of the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST), law enforcement successfully dismantled a terrorist cell comprised of six individuals suspected of engaging in various criminal activities motivated by extremist ideologies. These activities reportedly included theft, robbery, and the laundering of proceeds from such crimes, a practice often referred to as the "legitimization of spoils." The arrests occurred during separate operations conducted on Sunday and Monday across multiple locations, including Kenitra, Casablanca, and the Dar El Gueddari region in Sidi Kacem province, as well as Sidi Taybi.
The BCIJ issued a press release detailing the search warrants executed as part of this case, which resulted in the seizure of extremist literature, manuscripts, and an array of bladed weapons, both sharp and blunt. Additionally, significant amounts of money in Moroccan dirhams, suspected to originate from illicit activities, were confiscated. The operations further led to the recovery of a balaclava, gloves, and three vehicles—including two cargo vans—and a motorcycle believed to have been utilized in the commission of these criminal acts.
Investigation Uncovers Coordinated Criminal Scheme
Ongoing investigations, bolstered by security surveillance, have revealed that the suspects were deeply entrenched in extremist ideology and had engaged in theft and burglary as part of a coordinated scheme designed to generate illicit profits. Their modus operandi involved targeting livestock farms in various rural areas surrounding Kenitra and Sidi Slimane, where they conducted thefts and subsequently sold the stolen goods at local markets in Joumaa Shim (in the province of Safi) and Zemamra (in the province of Sidi Bennour). The BCIJ is actively focused on uncovering the full extent of the criminal activities associated with these suspects, as well as establishing connections between their crimes and extremist affiliations. Efforts are also underway to identify and apprehend any remaining accomplices or associates involved in these operations.
The suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue under the supervision of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which oversees terrorism and extremism-related cases. This operation underscores Morocco's commitment to combating extremism and ensuring public safety amidst a backdrop of regional instability.
