Morocco's Ambitious Investment in AI Mega Data Centers
In an ambitious move towards technological advancement and digital sovereignty, Morocco is investing heavily in two mega data centers, each projected to consume 500 megawatts, located in Nouaceur and Dakhla. This investment, amounting to several billion dirhams, is a significant gamble on the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to transform the nation’s economy and digital landscape. However, this bold initiative faces a myriad of challenges, including energy supply issues, water scarcity, and concerns regarding the financial viability of such extensive projects.
As part of the Nexus AI Factory project, which was officially launched on April 8, the Moroccan government, under the leadership of the Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, is collaborating with Nexus Core Systems to develop cutting-edge infrastructure. The Nouaceur facility is slated to be a high-performance computing (HPC) center with an initial capacity of 36 megawatts by the end of 2027, with an ambitious goal to reach 500 megawatts eventually. For context, the only existing data center with a higher capability is Switch Inc.'s Citadel campus in Nevada, boasting a capacity of 650 megawatts, thereby setting a high benchmark for Morocco's aspirations.
Meanwhile, the Dakhla data center, part of the larger Igoudar digital complex, is also targeting a capacity of 500 megawatts. This project has garnered support from various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, local government authorities, the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab regional council, and the Mohammed VI Fund for Investment. The collaboration is aimed at fostering Morocco's digital sovereignty and ensuring that the country plays a competitive role in the global digital economy. Ultimately, while the prospects of these mega data centers are promising, the realization of Morocco's ambitions hinges on overcoming these formidable challenges.
