Morocco's Coach Reflects on World Cup Journey and Future Aspirations

Building on World Cup Success: Insights from Morocco's Coach

In a recent press conference held in Salé, near the capital city of Rabat, Morocco's national football team coach, Mohamed Wahbi, expressed that reaching the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup represents a pivotal moment for the team, one that should be leveraged to develop a more competitive squad capable of facing off against the world’s top teams. He acknowledged a noticeable disparity in skill levels between Moroccan players and their French counterparts, particularly after Morocco's exit from the tournament following a 2-0 defeat to France.

Wahbi emphasized the importance of utilizing the experiences gained during the 2026 World Cup to forge a brighter future for Moroccan football. He stated, "We need to capitalize on our participation in the 2026 World Cup to build a strong group that can compete in future challenges." His comments reflect a commitment to continuous improvement and growth within the national team.

The Moroccan team's journey in the tournament came to an end in the quarter-finals, but they demonstrated commendable performance earlier, with a draw against Brazil (1-1) in the group stage, followed by victories over Scotland (1-0) and Haiti (4-2). In the knockout rounds, they triumphed over the Netherlands in a tense penalty shootout in the Round of 32 and secured a convincing 3-0 win against Canada in the Round of 16 before facing the formidable French team.

Reflecting on their performance, Wahbi noted that the team's style of play remained consistent against France and reiterated that, while respect for his players is paramount, a comparison with French players is challenging. He pointed out that the groundwork for the current team began in March of this year, building upon the achievements of the past few years. This foundation has enabled the team to maintain its football identity and strive for further development.

As the Moroccan national team returned home after their quarter-final exit, they proudly celebrated their remarkable achievement, which stands as the best result among Arab and African nations in the 2026 World Cup. Despite not replicating their historic success from the 2022 Qatar World Cup, where they reached the semi-finals and finished fourth, the Moroccan team has shown significant progress. The 23rd edition of the World Cup, featuring 48 teams, commenced on June 11 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and will conclude on July 19.
