Record-Breaking Cucumber Exports
Morocco's cucumber exports to Germany are witnessing unprecedented growth, with the 2025/26 season already eclipsing the remarkable figures recorded in the previous year. According to recent reports from EastFruit, Germany has imported an impressive 3,900 tons of Moroccan cucumbers from July 2025 to March 2026, which translates to a staggering value exceeding EUR 8 million. This achievement signifies a notable 10% increase compared to the previous season and an astonishing 28-fold rise since the 2021/22 season. The German market has now established a year-round sourcing relationship with Moroccan cucumbers, with demand peaking dramatically during the winter months, particularly between November and February. December 2025 emerged as the standout month, with imports nearing the impressive threshold of 1,000 tons.
Strategic Shift in Export Dynamics
While Spain and the Netherlands continue to dominate Germany's cucumber supply, accounting for over 80% of the total imports, Morocco has made significant strides in this competitive market. The North African nation's share of the German cucumber market has climbed from a mere 0.5% last season to 0.8% during the first nine months of the 2025/26 season. However, the actual volumes may be even higher, as Spain often purchases Moroccan cucumbers only to re-export them throughout Europe, including to Germany. This sharp increase in direct shipments is indicative of a fundamental shift in Morocco's export strategy, aimed at establishing a more direct footprint in Northern European markets by circumventing traditional European distribution hubs. This accomplishment not only underscores Morocco's growing prominence in the cucumber trade but also builds upon the country's overall success in vegetable exports, highlighted by a record-setting performance in 2024/25.
