Morocco's Culture Minister Evaluates Heritage Preservation Initiatives in Marrakech

Strengthening Heritage Preservation Efforts in Morocco

In a significant move to protect and promote Morocco's rich cultural heritage, Minister of Culture Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid recently undertook a comprehensive tour of historical sites and heritage interpretation centers in Marrakech. This visit is a vital component of the country's ongoing efforts to assess and enhance restoration projects aimed at safeguarding its cultural legacy from various threats, including cultural appropriation. The minister's tour commenced at the heritage interpretation centers located at Bab Aylan and Bab Aghmat, which play an essential role in bridging the gap between national heritage and the public by utilizing modern tools to make these cultural treasures accessible to visitors.

Among the highlights of the minister's visit was a field examination of Aghmat, one of Morocco's oldest urban settlements. The tour also included renowned landmarks such as El Badi Palace and Bahia Palace, celebrated for their exquisite architecture and historical significance. A crucial aspect of the minister's agenda was to evaluate the restoration progress and maintenance efforts at significant cultural sites impacted by the devastating Al Haouz earthquake in September 2023, which tragically resulted in the loss of over 3,000 lives and left many more displaced.

The Ministry of Culture emphasized that the visit aimed to monitor the restoration techniques being employed to rehabilitate these affected landmarks while ensuring that their historical integrity and visual identity remain intact. "These ongoing assessments are part of a broader vision to enhance both tangible and intangible national heritage," the ministry stated. Morocco has shown a steadfast commitment to preserving its diverse cultural heritage, particularly in the face of ongoing challenges related to cultural appropriation. The government has continually implemented measures designed to protect the nation's heritage, both tangible and intangible.

Last year, Minister Bensaid reaffirmed his dedication to the enforcement of Bill No. 33.22, legislation crafted to safeguard national heritage from usurpation and appropriation. During a meeting with the Education, Culture, and Communication Committee at the House of Representatives, he elaborated on the bill's provisions and the significant archaeological discoveries that have recently positioned Morocco as a key player in advanced archaeology and geological research on the world stage. This legislation forms part of Morocco's strategic initiatives, especially as the nation prepares to host prestigious events like the 2023 World Cup, which will serve as a platform to further showcase Morocco's cultural heritage.

In his remarks, Bensaid referenced King Mohammed VI’s address to the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, where the monarch highlighted the urgent need to protect Morocco's intangible cultural heritage from the threats posed by rapid global changes. He emphasized the importance of implementing measures to preserve this heritage while promoting the objectives outlined in the Convention on the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This ongoing commitment to heritage preservation is a testament to Morocco's rich cultural tapestry and its importance in the global arena.
