Morocco's Diaspora: A Multibillion-Dollar Economic Lever

Significant Contributions of the Moroccan Diaspora

The financial remittances from Moroccans living abroad continue to be a crucial element in bolstering the Moroccan economy. According to the latest figures released by the Office of Foreign Exchange, these remittances surpassed an impressive 12.4 billion dollars by the end of 2025. This marks a substantial increase from the previous year, where remittances had already reached over 11.7 billion dollars, constituting more than 8% of the nation's GDP. As a result, Morocco maintains its status as one of the leading beneficiaries of money transfers within the Middle East and North Africa region, as acknowledged by the World Bank.

Behind these staggering statistics lies a community of over 5 million Moroccans residing outside the country, with a significant portion living in Europe. France stands as the primary host nation, followed closely by Spain, Belgium, and the Netherlands. While these remittances provide essential financial support to families back home, the Moroccan government is now eager to channel more of these funds and the skills of the diaspora towards productive investments. The overarching aim is to foster industrial projects and sectors that add value, thereby enhancing economic growth, job creation, and overall development within the Kingdom.
