Continuity is Key for Morocco's National Team
The Moroccan Football Federation has reaffirmed its commitment to continuity by retaining Mohamed Ouahbi as the head coach of the national team, despite the disappointment of not reaching the World Cup semifinals. This decision was made during a meeting of the Executive Committee, as announced by federation official Abdessalam Belegchour on the social media platform X. The Moroccan national team faced a setback in the quarterfinals when they were defeated by France with a score of 0-2, which sparked some critical feedback from the press regarding Ouahbi's performance.
In response to the concerns raised, Belegchour emphasized that the meeting reinforced the federation's confidence in Coach Mohamed Ouahbi, allowing him to continue his work moving forward. The 49-year-old coach only took over the position from Walid Regragui earlier in March. Under his leadership, the U20 team achieved remarkable success last year by winning the World Cup title.
During the recent tournament held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Ouahbi guided the 'Lions of the Atlas' to a second-place finish in their group, trailing behind Brazil. The team secured victories in the knockout stages, defeating the Netherlands in the Round of 16 and Canada in the quarterfinals. Notably, in 2022, Morocco made history as the first African nation to reach the World Cup semifinals, marking a significant achievement in their football journey.
