Morocco Experiences Notable Increase in Gas Imports
Recent reports from the specialized platform "Energy" have revealed a significant increase in Morocco's gas imports, which surged by 15.4% in July 2026, compared to the previous month. This rise is attributed to the country's recovery from supply disruptions caused by the ongoing American-Israeli conflict in Iran. In July, Morocco imported approximately 991 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of gas, a noticeable increase from the 859 GWh recorded in June. Year-over-year comparisons indicate that gas imports remained relatively stable, with only a slight decrease from the 992 GWh imported in July 2025.
Details on Gas Supply Sources
While the Moroccan Ministry of Energy has not disclosed specific sources for gas supplies, it has confirmed that liquefied natural gas (LNG) is imported from various international markets. The report further highlighted that Morocco's gas imports primarily consist of LNG from countries such as Russia and the United States, along with supplies from Shell, which has been part of an agreement since 2023. The liquefied gas is regasified in Spain before being transported through the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline, a route that was previously used for Algerian gas exports to Europe.
The following is a breakdown of Morocco's gas imports for the first seven months of 2026:
- January: 822 GWh
- February: 572 GWh
- March: 583 GWh
- April: 377 GWh
- May: 778 GWh
- June: 859 GWh
- July: 991 GWh
This data highlights the fluctuating nature of gas imports and underscores the critical role that international relations play in energy supply chains.
