Morocco Sees Significant Increase in Gas Imports

According to the specialized platform "Energy", Morocco's gas imports rose by 15.4% in July 2026 compared to the previous month, primarily attributed to the country's recovery from supply disruptions caused by the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran. This growth reflects Morocco's resilience in navigating the global energy landscape, particularly in light of geopolitical tensions that have affected supply chains.

Recent data indicates that Moroccan gas imports totaled approximately 991 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in July, a notable increase from 859 GWh recorded in June. Year-on-year comparisons show that gas imports have remained relatively stable, with only a slight decrease from 992 GWh in July 2025, suggesting a consistent demand for energy resources in the country.

Sources and Supply Chain Dynamics

The Moroccan Ministry of Energy has not disclosed specific sources for gas supplies but has indicated that liquefied natural gas (LNG) is imported from various international markets. The "Energy" platform highlighted that Morocco has secured LNG from multiple sources, including prominent suppliers such as Russia and the United States, alongside ongoing agreements with Shell since 2023. This diversified approach to sourcing has enabled Morocco to mitigate risks associated with supply disruptions effectively.

Furthermore, the country processes its LNG in Spain, converting it from its liquid state back to gas before transporting it through the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline, which was previously utilized for transporting Algerian gas to Europe. This infrastructure not only supports Morocco's energy needs but also positions the nation as a key player in regional energy dynamics.

Looking at the gas import figures for the first seven months of 2026, the data reveals a fluctuating yet upward trend: 822 GWh in January, 572 GWh in February, 583 GWh in March, 377 GWh in April, 778 GWh in May, 859 GWh in June, and the recent spike to 991 GWh in July. These figures underscore Morocco's strategic efforts to enhance its energy security and adapt to ever-changing market conditions.
