Morocco's Grain Production Grows Amid Expectations of Reduced Imports

Morocco Anticipates Significant Grain Production Growth

On April 21, 2026, Morocco announced its expectation of producing approximately 90 million quintals of grain this agricultural season. This forecast is underpinned by favorable rainfall patterns and improved water resources, which have facilitated the cultivation of around 3.9 million hectares, significantly boosting dam reserves to an impressive 16 billion cubic meters. The enhancement in water availability has proven crucial in overcoming previous agricultural production challenges, thereby fostering positive expectations for grain output. Despite not reaching the target of cultivating 5 million hectares, the outlook remains optimistic.

The Moroccan authorities are contemplating a temporary suspension of soft wheat imports to bolster the marketing of the national crop. This strategic move is aimed at reducing grain imports by as much as 40%, contributing to the stabilization of the domestic market. The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Water, and Forests, Ahmed Bouari, emphasized this positive trend during the 18th International Agriculture Exhibition in Morocco, revealing a remarkable improvement in the agricultural sector's performance.

This year's anticipated production level surpasses the projections set in the 2026 financial law, which estimated a ceiling of 70 million quintals, further enhancing hopes for a more stable agricultural season capable of diminishing reliance on imports. Last year, grain production reached approximately 44 million quintals, highlighting the significant upward trajectory expected this time around. As Morocco continues to improve its agricultural capabilities, the country is on track to witness a substantial increase in its agricultural GDP, projected to rise by nearly 15% compared to the previous year. These developments signify a promising future for Morocco’s agricultural landscape, driven by strategic initiatives and favorable climatic conditions.
