Record Growth in Handicraft Exports
In a significant milestone for the Moroccan handicraft sector, exports soared to a remarkable MAD 1.232 billion (approximately $131 million) in 2025. This impressive achievement, announced by government spokesperson Mustapha Baitas during a press conference in Rabat, highlights the growing global demand for Moroccan artisanal products. Notably, the United States emerged as the primary market for these exports, accounting for nearly half, or 49%, of the total exports. This marks a substantial increase from the 2019 figures, where exports were reported at around MAD 792 million (around $84 million), showcasing a robust growth trajectory over the past few years.
The Economic Impact of Handicrafts
Baitas emphasized the vital role that the handicraft sector plays in the Moroccan economy. Employing approximately 20% of the country’s active workforce, this sector is a significant source of livelihood for many Moroccans, particularly women, who make up 54% of the workforce in handicrafts. The economic contributions of handicrafts extend beyond direct employment; they account for about 7% of Morocco's gross domestic product (GDP), 7.6% of national exports, and nearly 10% of the country’s tourism revenues. Furthermore, vocational training programs in this field have reported an impressive 85% job placement rate for graduates, underscoring the sector’s potential to provide sustainable employment opportunities.
