Morocco's Commitment to Road Safety and Global Standards
On July 21, 2026, during a high-level meeting in New York, Morocco's Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdel-Samad Qiyuh, asserted the country’s pioneering role in road safety at both regional and international levels, attributing this achievement to the enlightened vision of King Mohammed VI. The King has strategically prioritized the protection of the right to life alongside the enhancement of road safety, establishing it as a fundamental national goal.
In his address at the United Nations General Assembly focused on road safety, aimed at accelerating progress towards sustainable development goals, Qiyuh highlighted how this vision has positioned Morocco as a reference point and a reliable partner in road safety initiatives worldwide. He pointed out that Morocco has developed an integrated national strategy aligned with the Global Road Safety Action Plan through 2030. This strategy emphasizes good governance, law enforcement, infrastructure development, educational initiatives, and the incorporation of modern technologies, including artificial intelligence and innovation.
Furthermore, Qiyuh noted that Morocco's hosting of the Fourth Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in February 2025 in Marrakech was a significant milestone in mobilizing international efforts towards road safety. The conference culminated in the adoption of the "Marrakech Declaration," which serves as a roadmap for expediting international commitments in road safety.
The Marrakech Conference also launched the "Mohammed VI International Road Safety Award," exemplifying the royal vision aimed at encouraging innovation, recognizing best practices, and enhancing international cooperation to save lives. The high-level meeting concluded with the adoption of a declaration on progress made in promoting road safety, marking an important step on the global stage. This declaration took into account all amendments proposed by Morocco, particularly the inclusion of the "Marrakech Declaration" and the highlighting of the Fourth Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety held in Marrakech. It also praised the royal initiative to establish the Mohammed VI International Road Safety Award.
These accomplishments signify unprecedented recognition from the United Nations of Morocco's leading role in road safety and its effective contribution to enhancing global governance in this crucial area. The meeting included prominent attendees such as Omar Hilal, Morocco's permanent representative to the United Nations, and Banasar Boulaghoul, the Director General of the National Road Safety Agency (NARSA). This high-level gathering, initiated by the UN General Assembly presidency and the World Health Organization, operated under the theme: "Intensifying and Accelerating the Implementation of Commitments to Halve Road Traffic Deaths and Injuries by 2030."
