Morocco's Left-Wing Alliance Takes a Stand Against Diplomatic Relations with Israel
In a significant political declaration, the Left Alliance in Morocco, which includes the Unified Socialist Party (PSU) and the Federation of the Democratic Left (FGD), has expressed strong opposition to the recent decision to elevate diplomatic relations with Israel to the level of ambassadors. In their official statement, the PSU and FGD articulated a clear rejection of all forms of normalization with Israel, which they believe includes embassies, liaison offices, bilateral agreements, and collaborations across various sectors including political, economic, military, cultural, and media arenas. They argue that such normalization fails to contribute to peace, instead legitimizing Israeli actions that perpetuate crimes of occupation, genocide, and the forced displacement of people. The Left Alliance contends that peace cannot be achieved through diplomatic recognition of an entity that operates on the principles of occupation and colonization.
Addressing the contentious issue of Western Sahara, the Left Alliance reaffirmed its commitment to Morocco's territorial integrity, declaring it a just national cause that is non-negotiable and impermissible to compromise. However, they emphasized that the defense of this territorial claim does not justify engaging in normalization with Israel, an entity they assert is fundamentally built on occupation.
In contrast to this opposition, Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita has publicly indicated that the newly established relations between Rabat and Tel Aviv could yield humanitarian benefits for the Palestinian people. He suggested that Morocco's engagement with Israel can facilitate humanitarian assistance for Palestinians, presenting a divergent view on the implications of the normalization process.
