Modernization of C-130 Hercules Aircraft Underway
On September 1, 2026, Morocco's Royal Air Force has officially embarked on the implementation phase of its C-130 Hercules military transport aircraft modernization program. This ambitious initiative is being spearheaded by the American firm L3Harris Technologies, which has begun development work on the first Moroccan aircraft as part of a broader strategy aimed at extending the operational lifespan of several Hercules planes for additional decades and equipping them with advanced electronic and digital systems.
According to information released by L3Harris, the first Moroccan aircraft is currently undergoing maintenance and repair at the company's facilities in Waco, Texas. Initial updates on the measurement devices and engine data display systems are in progress, following the completion of preliminary inspections. The initiation of actual work comes after L3Harris secured a multi-year contract in July 2025 to upgrade several Moroccan C-130 aircraft, although the company has not disclosed the financial value of the deal or the total number of planes included in the program.
Comprehensive Upgrades and Local Maintenance Capabilities
Anticipation surrounds the arrival of a second Moroccan aircraft to the program in the fall of 2026, with a third aircraft expected to enter the modernization workshop by the end of the same year. The latter will undergo a comprehensive upgrade of its avionics, featuring a fully digital cockpit. The scope of the modernization program extends beyond electronic systems; it encompasses modifications to the aircraft, in-depth periodic maintenance, engine overhauls, and logistical support, alongside the development of aviation electronics.
For the first aircraft, L3Harris has completed preliminary inspections and commenced the upgrade of the backup flight system and digital display for engine data. The third aircraft will experience extensive development, including a complete digital cockpit overhaul. The American company anticipates that these upgrades will enable Moroccan aircraft to remain operational for an extended period, reducing downtime associated with maintenance. By modernizing existing aircraft rather than replacing them with new models, the program aims to prolong their operational lifespan while integrating digital capabilities more swiftly.
Simultaneously, Morocco is making strides towards developing local capabilities for military aircraft maintenance. A new maintenance center is being established in Ben Slimane, dedicated to heavy maintenance and upgrades for the Moroccan C-130 Hercules and F-16 aircraft. This project involves collaboration between Maintenance Aero Maroc and Maintenance Aeronautic Assets, with support from Lockheed Martin. The center aims to enhance national capabilities in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of military aircraft while transferring expertise and training Moroccan technicians.
The C-130 Hercules fleet upgrade is part of a larger initiative to enhance the air capabilities of the Royal Armed Forces, which includes the modernization of 23 F-16 fighter jets to the F-16V standard and the acquisition of 25 new F-16C/D Block 72 aircraft, bringing the total fleet to 48 aircraft, including both new and upgraded models.
