Morocco Confirms Massive Influx of Migrants and Tragic Loss of Life
In a recent statement, Morocco's Ministry of the Interior has disclosed that approximately 40,000 individuals attempted to cross into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, with an additional 1,135 reaching Melilla. This announcement marks the first official assessment of the situation following a significant surge in migrant crossings. Tragically, the report confirms that eleven migrants lost their lives during these attempts, with ten drowning and one fatality resulting from a fall from rocky terrain between Fnideq, Morocco, and Ceuta. Meanwhile, Spanish authorities have reported at least 72 migrant deaths among the over 60,000 who attempted to enter Ceuta during this period, with the majority subsequently returned to Moroccan territory.

The Ministry highlighted how misleading narratives, often fueled by the activities of human trafficking networks, created a false perception of ease regarding access to European territories without consequences. A specific misinterpretation of a Spanish court ruling, which prohibited the immediate return of migrants intercepted at sea, further contributed to this misunderstanding.
