German National Arrested in Tangier for Kidnapping and Extortion
In a significant law enforcement operation, Moroccan police in Tangier apprehended a 26-year-old German man on Wednesday, who was wanted under an international arrest warrant and an Interpol Red Notice issued by German judicial authorities. The suspect faces serious allegations, including kidnapping, unlawful detention, extortion, and violence involving dangerous substances, all of which reportedly occurred on German soil in 2021.
The successful arrest was the result of an effective collaboration and intelligence-sharing initiative between Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) and Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA). Initial investigations have revealed that the suspect illegally entered Morocco using forged German travel documents that bore the name of another individual, raising further concerns regarding identity theft.
Following the arrest, the suspect was placed under police custody as per the orders of the relevant public prosecutor, with a judicial investigation currently underway to explore the full extent of his fraudulent activities. The Interpol National Central Bureau in Rabat has already informed its German counterpart about the arrest, setting the stage for formal extradition proceedings.
Morocco’s Growing Role in International Law Enforcement
This operation is part of a broader trend of Interpol-related arrests conducted by Moroccan security forces throughout 2026. Earlier this year, police in Tangier detained a 34-year-old French national who was wanted for his alleged involvement in a cross-border drug trafficking network. Additionally, a 54-year-old Dutch national was arrested in Martil for defrauding 135 investors out of nearly €5.8 million.
Moreover, Moroccan law enforcement has made headlines for apprehending various fugitives from different nationalities, including a Swedish national sought for international drug trafficking and a French suspect involved in a €640,000 fraud case. The arrest of notorious Israeli scammer Avi Golan further underscores Morocco’s commitment to tackling transnational crime.
Morocco's prominence within Interpol has also been on the rise, highlighted by the hosting of the 93rd Interpol General Assembly in Marrakech, where Prefect Mohammed Dkhissi was elected as the vice-president of the organization for Africa. The country has actively participated in significant initiatives, such as Operation Ramz, a large-scale cybercrime operation that resulted in hundreds of arrests across the Middle East and North Africa, as well as the Cyber Games and Digital Security Challenge held in Marrakech.
The recent arrest of the German fugitive not only underscores Morocco's enhanced capability to deal with transnational crime but also reflects its growing integration into the global law enforcement framework.
