Morocco's Strategic Mineral Reserves and Global Position

A recent report released by the International Energy Agency (IEA) titled "Global Mineral Outlook 2026" highlights Morocco's continuous efforts to solidify its status as a key player in the strategic minerals market. The country is capitalizing on its vast phosphate reserves, along with its growing presence in the cobalt and graphite sectors—two minerals that are witnessing increased demand due to the global expansion of electric vehicle battery production and clean energy technologies.

The report indicates that Morocco holds approximately 70% of the world's phosphate reserves, making it the largest holder globally. Despite this significant position, the kingdom currently accounts for only about 15% of global supplies, while China continues to lead in worldwide production, even though it has a limited share of the reserves.

Investment Opportunities and Industrial Growth

Moroccan phosphate is a crucial raw material in the production of purified phosphoric acid, which is utilized in manufacturing lithium iron phosphate batteries—the most commonly used batteries in electric vehicles. The IEA predicts that Morocco's contribution in this sector will increase in the coming years as global demand for these technologies continues to rise.

Moreover, the free trade agreements that Morocco has established with the European Union and the United States provide the kingdom with a significant competitive advantage. These agreements enable industrial projects based in Morocco to access these markets under preferential terms, encouraging major Chinese companies to invest in the battery sector within the country.

In this context, the report notes that several prominent Chinese firms, including Gotion, BTR, Huayou, and CNGR, have launched industrial projects in Morocco, taking advantage of the availability of raw materials, industrial infrastructure, and trade agreements. This development enhances Morocco's position as a regional hub for the production of electric vehicle battery components.

The report also emphasizes Morocco's efforts to develop its cobalt sector through the Managem Group project in the Bouazzer region, aimed at producing cobalt sulfate, a key ingredient in battery manufacturing. Additionally, the graphite plant project in Tangier is expected to contribute to the production of materials dedicated to electric vehicle batteries by 2030.

The International Energy Agency views Morocco as increasingly positioned among the countries poised to play a larger role in global mineral supply chains, thanks to its natural reserves, industrial investments, and network of trade agreements. This shift enhances the kingdom's chances of transforming into a strategic center for industries related to energy transition and the green economy.
