Morocco Launches Targeted Campaign in Hong Kong to Attract Chinese Travelers
In a significant move to enhance its tourism sector, Morocco's National Tourism Office (ONMT) has initiated a focused campaign in Hong Kong aimed at drawing more Chinese tourists to the Kingdom. This campaign marks a strategic effort to showcase Morocco as a premier travel destination, leveraging the growing interest from affluent Chinese travelers. The event successfully gathered approximately 30 tour operators and travel agencies from Hong Kong, all keen on exploring Morocco's diverse offerings.
The ONMT organized this impactful event in collaboration with the Moroccan Embassy in China and the Honorary Consulate of Morocco in Hong Kong. It featured a business luncheon and engaging B2B meetings that facilitated networking between travel companies already promoting Morocco and those contemplating the addition of the destination to their travel portfolios. Highlighting Morocco's rich historical and cultural heritage, the campaign underscored the country's expanding air connectivity with China, which is seen as a pivotal factor for increasing future visitor numbers.
Moroccan Ambassador to China, Abdelkader El Ansari, remarked on the impressive growth in Chinese tourist arrivals, noting an increase from approximately 107,000 visitors in 2023 to around 200,000 in 2025. With ambitious goals, Morocco aims to attract 500,000 Chinese tourists in the near future and is targeting one million by the start of the next decade. This aspiration is bolstered by the country's stability, enhanced security measures, an increase in direct flight options, a variety of tourism products, and intensified promotional campaigns tailored for the Chinese market.
ONMT representative Otman Mazouz emphasized that this initiative is part of a broader strategy aimed at elevating Morocco's profile among Chinese travel professionals and establishing long-term partnerships with leading tour operators. He noted that Morocco offers a unique blend of authenticity, cultural richness, and premium experiences that resonate with the increasing demand among Asian travelers for distinctive and niche tourism experiences.
Participants in the event also highlighted the strong potential of the Hong Kong market, where wealthier travelers are actively seeking cultural, luxury, and experiential vacations, including golf and desert tourism. Recognizing this trend, Morocco is positioning itself as an ideal destination that can be integrated into multi-country itineraries covering Europe and the Middle East.
This campaign in Hong Kong is a key component of an ONMT roadshow that spans China's leading outbound tourism markets, including major cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Guangzhou. Through these efforts, Morocco seeks to solidify its presence in the Chinese market and maintain a trajectory of growth in visitor arrivals.
