Morocco Emphasizes Preventive Action in African Peace Initiatives

In a significant address in Luanda, Nasser Bourita, Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad, stressed the importance of placing prevention at the core of African efforts in the realms of peace and security. Speaking during the extraordinary 26th session of the African Union's Executive Council, dedicated to enhancing conflict prevention and resolution mechanisms across the continent, Bourita highlighted the need to address the root causes of conflicts. He emphasized that the interconnection between peace, security, and development should be central to preventive actions on the continent. Furthermore, he called for increased investment in factors that can sustainably establish peace.

During his remarks, Bourita reaffirmed Morocco's full support for the goals and objectives of this session. He articulated that the implementation of the "Luanda Action Plan" requires bolstered coordination between the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN), with adherence to this principle guiding their efforts. Additionally, he reiterated Morocco's commitment to the ambitions reflected in the Luanda Action Plan and its implementation matrix, asserting that funding mechanisms must respect the budgeting procedures of the African Union.

Advancing the African Peace and Security Architecture

This extraordinary session, conducted under the theme of enhancing and activating the African peace and security architecture, aims to establish an "Africa characterized by peace and security." This initiative aligns with the directives from the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, held in February 2026, which called for a summit in Luanda to address the enhancement of conflict prevention and resolution mechanisms and their funding. The session is expected to conclude with the adoption of a resolution alongside the Luanda Action Plan and its implementation matrix.
