Transforming the Energy Mix
According to insights from "Taqa," the evolution of Morocco's wind energy sector signals a growing importance of wind, which has now become the second-largest source of electricity production in the country, following coal. This shift is part of a broader trend where renewable energy sources have surpassed 46% of the national electricity mix by the end of 2025. This impressive growth trajectory brings Morocco closer to its strategic goal of increasing the share of renewables to 52% of the electricity production mix by 2030, a plan that emphasizes the diversification of energy sources, including wind, solar, and hydroelectric power.
The continuous addition of wind capacity has been facilitated by successive annual increments. From 2021 to 2025, Morocco successfully integrated an additional 1.364 gigawatts into its national electrical grid. Specifically, the annual contributions of wind capacity were recorded at 197 megawatts in 2021, 276 megawatts in 2022, 110 megawatts in 2023, 520 megawatts in 2024, and 261 megawatts in 2025. This consistent growth, despite annual fluctuations, is a testament to Morocco's commitment to achieving its renewable energy targets and enhancing its energy sovereignty while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
Furthermore, this upward trend positions Morocco among the leading drivers of wind energy growth in Africa, trailing only behind South Africa, which added 509 megawatts in 2024, and surpassing Egypt with an increase of 242 megawatts. A significant aspect of this performance includes the commissioning of the Jbel Lahdid wind farm, boasting a capacity of 270 megawatts, which represents one of the most impactful recent projects in the sector. Additionally, the rehabilitation and modernization of the Koudia Al Baida wind farm, the oldest on the African continent, have successfully enhanced the installed capacity to 100 megawatts through the replacement and optimization of existing equipment.
