Mothers Rally for the Release of Their Imprisoned Sons Following Protests in Morocco
In a heartfelt demonstration held in Rabat on Saturday, mothers gathered to demand the release of their sons who have been detained due to unrest associated with the "Generation Z 212" protests that occurred a year ago. As reported by a correspondent from AFP, around thirty women participated in the rally in front of the Parliament, marking the anniversary of these protests and calling for justice for their children.
One mother, Ilham Nekrou, expressed her anguish, stating that her son Adam has been incarcerated for an entire year, and she expressed a desire for freedom for all the imprisoned youth. Another participant, Saadia Ben Ziane, shared the plight of her 15-year-old grandson, who was also arrested during the protests, pleading for their release just as others had received theirs.
The "Generation Z 212" movement, initiated by anonymous activists online, called for nearly daily demonstrations over a two-week period last fall. The protests aimed to demand reforms, particularly in the healthcare and education sectors. However, these gatherings also led to acts of vandalism and confrontations in various cities, resulting in the death of three individuals and a subsequent decline in protest momentum.
According to Hakim Sekouk, coordinator of the "National Committee to Support Victims of the Suppression of the Generation Z Movement," approximately 750 individuals remain in custody, including minors and those yet to be tried. He highlighted concerns regarding violations in the legal proceedings against these detainees and emphasized the urgent need for their release.
Last October, the Public Prosecutor's Office reported that over 2,400 people had been charged with violent acts, with around 1,400 still in custody. Moroccan courts have previously issued lengthy prison sentences or probation for hundreds of individuals, including dozens of minors, in connection with the "Generation Z 212" protests.
