Mothers Demand Justice for Their Detained Sons in Morocco

In a poignant gathering held in Rabat, Morocco, on Saturday, a group of around thirty mothers united to demand the release of their sons, who have been imprisoned following the unrest linked to the "Generation Z 212" protests that occurred last year. As reported by AFP, these mothers assembled in front of the Parliament building to mark the anniversary of the demonstrations, which had called for significant reforms in the health and education sectors.

One mother, Ilham Nekrou, voiced her anguish stating that her son Adam has been incarcerated for an entire year, emphasizing a collective desire among the mothers for freedom for all detained youths. Another mother, Saadia Ben Zeyani, shared her heartache about her 15-year-old grandson, who was arrested a year ago, expressing her hope for their release, similar to others who have been freed.

The protests initiated by the "Generation Z 212" movement last fall were largely organized by anonymous activists online, leading to almost daily demonstrations over two weeks. These protests aimed to address critical issues, particularly demanding reforms in health care and education. However, they devolved into violence and vandalism in several cities, resulting in three fatalities and a subsequent decline in the movement's momentum.

According to Hakim Sikkok, the coordinator of the "National Committee to Support Victims of the Crackdown on the Generation Z Movement," approximately 750 individuals remain incarcerated, including minors, many of whom have yet to face trial. The committee highlighted violations in the prosecution process and underscored the pressing need for their release. In October of the previous year, the public prosecutor's office reported that over 2,400 individuals, including around 1,400 in custody, were charged with acts of violence.

Moroccan courts have previously handed down lengthy prison sentences, or suspended sentences, to hundreds of individuals, including many minors, in relation to the "Generation Z 212" protests. These developments reflect ongoing tensions and calls for accountability within the context of social unrest in Morocco.
