Netanyahu's Spokesman Resigns Amid Controversial Remarks and Allegations of Racism

Resignation and Controversy Surrounding Ziv Agmon

Ziv Agmon, the spokesperson and acting chief of staff for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, announced his resignation on Wednesday, shortly after controversial and racist remarks he made regarding Mizrahi Jews, as well as critical comments about Netanyahu himself, came to light. In an official statement released by Netanyahu's office, Agmon admitted the authenticity of the quotes but insisted they had been misrepresented and taken out of context. He expressed that the excerpts shared were part of private conversations with a long-time acquaintance and emphasized that the majority of these discussions occurred prior to his tenure in the Prime Minister's Office. Agmon contended that the intention behind revealing these quotes was a malicious effort to undermine both his character and that of the Prime Minister he works for.

In his statement, Agmon vehemently rejected the allegations of racism towards Jews of Moroccan descent, labeling them as absurd, especially considering his own family's Moroccan heritage. He condemned the practice of publicizing snippets of private conversations from years ago, asserting that such actions should be criticized and that he sincerely apologized for any offense caused by his remarks. Agmon indicated that his role had shifted into the public eye, creating a divisive atmosphere around him, which prompted his decision to step down from his position.

Critical Remarks and Internal Fallout

According to Channel 12, which first reported on Agmon's comments, he had made disparaging remarks about Netanyahu, labeling him as 'old' and suggesting that he was 'finished' following the devastating Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. Agmon questioned the leadership capabilities of Netanyahu and his ministers, expressing doubts about their ability to negotiate for hostages. He further criticized the Likud party, suggesting that it was nearing its end and even suggested that recordings of conversations with Egyptian officials should be made public to reveal Netanyahu's alleged failings. Agmon's rhetoric extended to derogatory comments about Likud lawmakers of Middle Eastern descent, which have drawn significant backlash.

The fallout from Agmon's statements has been severe, with calls for his dismissal coming from both Likud lawmakers and opposition politicians alike. Prominent members of Netanyahu's cabinet also condemned Agmon's behavior. This incident marks a continuation of controversy for Agmon, who was previously suspended by the Israel Bar Association for unprofessional conduct in 2022, including a serious violation of client loyalty. Although his suspension was set to take effect in 2025, he has appealed the ruling, which is currently under review by the Jerusalem District Court.
