Netherlands Reaffirms Support for Morocco's Autonomy Plan in Western Sahara Dispute

The Netherlands has reiterated its endorsement of Morocco's Autonomy Plan, labeling it as the most authentic and realistic pathway to resolving the ongoing conflict over Western Sahara. This significant announcement was made by Dutch Foreign Affairs Minister Tom Berendsen during a press briefing held on Tuesday in Rabat, following his discussions with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. Their dialogue was part of Berendsen's working visit to Morocco on April 7 and 8, aimed at reinforcing bilateral relations and addressing regional issues.

During the press briefing, Berendsen emphasized the Netherlands' commitment to United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which supports the autonomy plan as a viable political solution. He also highlighted the essential role of Staffan de Mistura, the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy, in navigating negotiations that align with Morocco's proposed autonomy plan. The overarching goal is to establish a just and lasting political resolution that is acceptable to all parties involved.

Furthermore, the Joint Communiqué issued after the talks underscored the Netherlands' intention to uphold its position through diplomatic and economic means, in accordance with international law. This reaffirmation aligns with similar statements made by the Netherlands in December of the previous year, which welcomed the adoption of Resolution 2797 by the UN Security Council. This resolution marks a significant endorsement of Morocco's autonomy plan as a legitimate avenue to bring an end to the long-standing dispute over Western Sahara.
